Kansas tennis lands five-star recruit

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas tennis head coach Todd Chapman announced the signing of Julia Deming, a five-star recruit according to tennisrecuiting.net, who signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) during the early signing period.

Deming, from Oasis High School in Fallbrook, California, is currently ranked as the No. 36 prospect in the United States for the 2017 class. In doubles, she is the No. 1-ranked player in the Southern California Girls 18s Doubles and has claimed the No. 17 spot nationally. Deming currently ranks as the No. 5 singles player on the Girls 18s Southern California list.

“We feel like we hit a homerun with the signing of Julia,” said Chapman. “Not only is Julia a great tennis player, she is an even better person. We really have enjoyed getting to know Julia the past year and a half, as well as her family. Julia is someone we recognized early in the recruiting process who we were going to really go after.”

In 2016, Deming received a bronze ball in doubles at both the USTA National Clay Courts Championships and the USTA National Hard Courts Championships.

“What first attracted me to KU were the coaches, Todd and Caroline (Lilley),” said Deming. “Their attention to my game clearly stood out. When I took my unofficial visit last November I was very impressed by the team’s friendship and support they showed for one another. This was a very important decision I had to make, but after my visit it was clear to me that KU was the perfect fit for me.”

She also represented Southern California at the Pacific Cup, Maze Cup and Intersectionals. During her 2016 season, Deming received the Southern California Sportsmanship of the Year award.

“Julia competes arguably in the hardest USTA section in the U.S.,” said Chapman. “She is bringing with her a wealth of experience and confidence knowing she has competed against the best. Julia has an all-court game that allows her to mix things up and the ability to keep her opponent off balance. Caroline did a great job of establishing a bond with Julia early on in the recruiting process and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome our newest Jayhawk to the KU Tennis family.”

Deming will join the Jayhawks next fall for the start of the 2018-19 season.
